My dad had a high cholesterol 2 years ago,so he started lipitor and modified his diet completely and now its pretty nicely under control, but he stopped eating rice from that day forward because the doctor told him not to.I personally think that rice wouldn't have anything to do with high cholestrel and my dad's weight is not an issue either. So is the doctor wrong. Please only give me answer if you know it for sure and please take time to explain it properly.thanks.My dad stopped eating rice after his doctor told him not to.Is it a good advice?
Rice shouldn't really raise you're dad's cholesterol level unless he eats it cooked with butter or some kind of cholesterol raising fat. Proof: I know this because I took a nutrition course plus I looked it up at nutritiondata.com(great site). In other words, this doctor is a kook. In general, people shouldn't take nutrition advice from anyone except a registered dietitian. If it helps to understand, cholesterol is a type of fat or a sterol. Foods that raise bad cholesterol: trans and saturated fats, high alcohol consumption, obesity, etc Foods high in cholesterol are eggs, organs, meat, certain sea foods are super high too. Perhaps the doctor meant that your dad should stop eating bleached white rice, which is stripped of its nutrients in order to have a healthier lifestyle instead of having no rice at all.My dad stopped eating rice after his doctor told him not to.Is it a good advice?
I am a heart patient...Had high cholesterol...
Geez all of my Doc's tell me to eat rice instead
of potatoes...
Really not sure why his doctor told him not to !!!!
OK MY DAD HAS THE SAME PROBLEM YOURS HAS AND HE'S DOCTOR DID NOT TELL HIM TO STOP EATING RICE I DON'T BELIEVE THAT IT AFFECTS HIM IN ANY WAY AND THINKING ABOUT IT, YOU KNOW THAT'S ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT VEGETABLE FOR ASIAN PEOPLE. SO IF IT WAS BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH I CAN INSURE YOU THAT THEY WOULDN'T EAT IT, BUT HE'S DOCTOR COULD HAVE FIND A REASON TO ASK HIM TO STOP EATING RICE, HOPE THIS HELPS...
Well, rice is a grain which is generally not good for your weight. If your dad isn't having any weight problems, then he can eat rice if he wants to. His doctor isn't necessarily wrong, he's just watching out for your dad.
Actually i'm very surprised his doctor suggested that. However, there must be a reason behind it. As far as the cholesterol goes, rice is actually not bad (maybe it was all the butter he put on it?)...by itself rice has a B vitamin complex which actually aides in lowering cholesterol (niacin is thought to reduce cholesterol). I found this:
Nutritional Information
Rice is an extremely healthy food for a number of reasons. Rice is a complex carbohydrate, which means that it contains starch and fiber.
Complex carbohydrates are digested slowly, allowing the body to utilize the energy released over a longer period which is nutritionally efficient.
Rice has low sodium content and contains useful quantities of potassium, the B vitamins, thiamin and niacin. An average portion of rice (50g) provide about 11% of the abut estimated average daily requirement of protein. On portion also has only 245 kcal. Those looking to reduce their fat and cholesterol intakes can turn to rice because it contain only a trace of fat and no cholesterol. Rice is also gluten free, so suitable for coeliacs, and it is easlily digested, and therefore a wonderful food for the very young and elderly
There are several things I would like to address here:
1) white rice is brown rice that's been bleached, and all of the
bran (the good part) has been eliminated. What's left is
nothing but pure starch, which turns to sugar in the body,
which turns into excess pounds,
2) your father's Dr. is partially correct, on stopping the rice
consumption, but putting him on Lipitor to control his
cholesterol is not a good idea, because:
a) cholesterol is the body's best friend. Cholesterol is
the ';stuff'; that patches all of the little tears, rips
and ';holes'; that are in your blood vessels, and w/o
cholesterol, we would all die from bleeding to death!
b) cholesterol needs to be helped, not reduced, or
controlled w/ drugs; drugs will only, and only cause
unwanted side effects, which will cause (or appear as)
new problems, and on and on, ect.
3) your father's weight is something to consider, along w/
age, diet, and if his diet consists of mostly processed
foods and few fresh foods, he needs to consider both
changing over to mostly fresh foods, raw veggies, raw
fruits, no soda, no alcohol, no sweets.
4) check your father's thyroid level. low thyroid, or
hypothyroidism, will appear as other problems, disorders,
and will cause a mis-diagnosis.
DO NOT GET THE BLOOD TEST TO CHECK THE THYROID LEVEL- the results will be false, because the T4 is in the blood, and is wrapped up w/ proteins, making it unusable to the body.
Do GET A SALIVA TEST-this saliva test will check for T3 hormone levels. T3 is in the saliva, and is the active thyroid used in the body.
To get the saliva test, check out www.doctortalk.com (this the spam-free, spyware-free website for Dr. Howard Hagglund, a naturapath in Tulsa, OK). This website will also answer some of your questions about cholesterol, diet, and medications.
Hope this helps you and your father.
All the best to you.
