Can anyone give me advice on the guidelines of blood sugar levels?

Hi all

I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant and have just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes I'm doing some self monitoring for the next 3 days.

Can anyone advise what my levels should be before I eat and 2 hours after I eat.

ThanksCan anyone give me advice on the guidelines of blood sugar levels?
I had gestational diabetes this past pregnancy. The GD portion of my pregnancy was managed by a high-risk pregnancy specialist, that I saw once, and then I checked in with a trained nurse with my blood sugar levels. The rest of my pregnancy was taken care of by my CNM and her backup dr.

I was told to check my blood sugar levels first thing in the morning and then 2 hrs after each meal, no checking before a meal. They did not treat with insulin unless the numbers 2 hours after a meal were ofter 135 or higher. However, once they were treating, they'd lower it to be consistently below 120. Some doctors will want insulin if the numbers are above 120. For fasting, I think they treated if it was often 105 or higher, and then would use insulin to keep it consistently below 95.

Most cases of gestational diabetes can be managed by diet. Have you seen a nutritionist? If not, you should; that could be a big help. In my case, I still required insulin at breakfast and supper, but that is not the norm.

Some tips to help keep your levels good. Insulin resistance is usually highest in the morning, so breakfast is often the worst time. Don't overdo the carbs at breakfast, especially sugar. If you eat sugary breakfast cereal, your numbers may be awful. But, if you eat ww toast with peanut butter, they might be perfectly fine. You're better off eating less more frequently, because it keeps your blood sugar on more of an even keel. I was eating 3 meals and 3 snacks a day. Exercise can help keep blood sugar levels down. Try to be getting 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day. But, build up gradually if you aren't there yet.Can anyone give me advice on the guidelines of blood sugar levels?
Your doctor or diabetic counselor will advise you as to the glucose numbers that are right for you. In a very general sense, fasting numbers or before meal numbers will ideally be in a target range of 90-130. 2 hours after you eat below 180, but high enough to stay out of the hypoglycemic (under 70) range, is generally the target. Patients vary in many ways so the exact numbers your health care provider will give you may be more specific. These numbers are the ones recommended by the American Diabetes Association. I had Gestational Diabetes with my 4th baby. While high blood glucose numbers are to be avoided as much as possible, I had more trouble keeping my blood glucose numbers up to the target numbers. I was able to use the diet I was given combined with glucose monitoring to manage my glucose numbers fairly well and did not need to take insulin.
your dr should have told you what to watch for and when to call, as well as set you up with a GD counselor/dietician......every dr is different with the numbers, so call them and ask if they didn't tell you.
2 hours after eating no higher than 120.

Take a look at this page and scroll down, there is a chart to help you.
