Any advice on mailing/shipping a 65 lb metal statue?

The statue will be shipped/mailed within the continental US. It measures about 18 x 28 x 14 inches. Though it is metal, I do not want it to get dinged or damaged. What kind of box/crate should I get and where can I get it? I prefer to buy it in person (not via the internet or Ebay)? Thanks. Any other suggestions you might have will be appreciated.Any advice on mailing/shipping a 65 lb metal statue?
go to the UPS store with the statue and let them figure out the best way to ship itAny advice on mailing/shipping a 65 lb metal statue?
Take the item to one of those private mailers - one of those places that accept UPS or FedEx shipments and mail things for you through the USPS. They sell postage, etc - everything a post office sells, but at a much higher rate. Buy the packaging from them (box and packing material), but take it to the USPS to mail it. Dont't let them mail it. You will get a much cheaper rate from the Post Office than what they will charge you to mail it. They, afterall, are in the business to make money and they are really the middle guy, but they have the odd size boxes %26amp; materials.
Build your own shipping crate with pallet jack or forklift capabilities and use a motor freight shipper. Fed Ex and UPS will both turn down a 65# item.
FedEx bought Viking Freight So Fed Ex is competitely priced as far as bulk shipping goes and you get a tracking # and all fed exs are automatically guaranteed to $500.00

You need to Crate the item in a way that other items may be stacked on it during shipping

I would go to fed ex, show em the piece and ask em how do they want it and how much will it be figure the cost of crating materials and the value of your time building it versus going to a shipping type place that will crate and ship it for you. get a quote, compre the prices and may the best option win.
I would recommend calling or taking the statue to your local UPS store. I'm sure there are other postal stores that can help you too but UPS has always been helpful to me when it comes to mailing large packages.
There are shippers/couriers that make these crates to specification. In order for the crate to work, you need to add about a foot to each dimension, so your crate should measure

30 x 40 x 26. Make sure you tell them you want these to be the INSIDE dimensions. To better protect your statue, you should also get a heavy cardboard box about 22 x 32 x 18. Bubble wrap your statue and pack in the cardboard box first and then pack that in the crate. make sure you use plenty of packing peanuts to the point that the crate is overflowing with them. They will settle.

Bon voyage, statue!
i would call the airline you are sending it through and ask them what to do. they will most likely tell you what you need. and where to go to do this.
