Advice for writing short scripts or stories?

I want to write short scripts and short stories ranging from 1 page to 5 pages at the most. How can I tell an effective story (with good dialogue, action,etc) in 1 or 5 pages?Advice for writing short scripts or stories?
assuming you're writing about one character in particular, i usually just write about a short snippet from a character's life. just focus on one particular event and describe it in detail, with the character's interactions with those around them. i try not to go into detail about the character's past a lot. i hint at past events to give the character more mystery, but that's about it
