My dog being carsick prevents us from doing anything fun together. What advice what you give?

She get carsick and throws up. I do NOT feed her before going out.

Btw, will putting her in a crate help?

Also, the dog park is 20 minutes away and the ocean is 30 minutes away, so they're quite far. Too far for her to last.

How do I solve this problem? I can't walk her there...it's like, 7 miles. My dog being carsick prevents us from doing anything fun together. What advice what you give?
People have made a lot of great suggestions... but I thought I would put my two cents in... don't feed your dog an hour before or after being in the car... just a little tip.

ETA: My Pyr used to get car sick as well... and out of no where he just.. stopped. He now LOVES riding in the car. I have no idea why, nothing changed ::shrug::My dog being carsick prevents us from doing anything fun together. What advice what you give?
Not feeding the dog or crating her will not help. Trust me - I have an Irish Setter that gets car sick and I tried both of those. Check with your vet first (especially for the dose) but...my vet told me to give my dog a ginger root capsule one hour before placing him in the car. It worked! He no longer is getting sick - no matter how long the car ride is (we have made 4 hour trips with him!).

I can only find ginger root capsules in 500 mg. and that is fine for my 50 lb. dog. So please...please check with your vet before trying this. If your vet gives you the okay - you can find the capsules in most health departments (target, walmart, grocery stores, etc.) or health food stores.

Good luck and have fun at the beach!
My dog also gets carsick. He drools and he used to throw up and pee. It helped when i opened the window. my vet told me to put him in the car and drive him around the block a couple of times every day.
call your vet for the correct dosage according to your dogs weight, of Dramamine (over the counter drug used for motion sickness)
You need to gradually get her used to riding in the car. Begin by associating the car with good things - feed her in the car without closing the door or driving anywhere.

Once she is happy to get in the car, close the door for a few seconds and open it again. Then slowly begin closing the door for longer periods of time, always letting her out again BEFORE she gets upset.

Once she is comfortable just sitting in the car while it's not moving, you can try starting the car and sitting there for a few minutes. Eventually you will be able to make a short trip (back out of the driveway, then back in) with her.

Finally, you can begin with very short trips, and gradually work up to longer ones. Remember to take each step very slowly, and if she seems to be getting stressed or upset, back up to the last step until she calms down again. It will take a while, but eventually you will have a dog that loves car rides!
If she is in the back of the car it may be that she gets swung around more making her car sick. I remember feeling illin the back of a car but not the front when I was a kid. But then, you don't really want a loose dog on the front seat either. Doggy seat belt? Notmuch good if you have passengers though.
Read some books, watch some videos, on dog training. I recommend videos of ';The Dog Whisperer'; with Cesar Millan. Available at your library.
Start with just letting her sit in the car let her check it out and get used to being in it then start taking her on short rides first the slowly extend it she will get use to it. I would not put her in A crate that could make her worse. Also if you are nervous about taking her that could be another factor because she can sense you mood.
Go to the herbalist %26amp; ask for ';Ginger'; this helps with car sickness OR you could contact Dorwest Herbs they would be able to give you something similar %26amp; would work with you to find out what would best suit your dog

A crate is good just make sure there are 2 doors on it if it is for the car

good Luck
My dog has pills for his hyperactivity/nervousness/carsickness. they calm him down so he doesn't get sick. I think that he gets sick because he gets so nervous about where we are going. ask your vet about something like that,
We had a dog like that, we were on a long long trip to Wales, we had him in a cage, he was sick for hours. And the same coming back, but the next time we took him out he was fine. I think the best way is to just keep going, and hope like mine it stops. Good luck
Couldn't you at least walk her in your neighborhood? Play with her in your yard , if you have one? Talk to your vet. Sometimes they can give you a med to give them before traveling anywhere. Is she young? They often outgrow this. Take her for short rides and let her get accustomed to the motion.
